FOUNDATIONS OF LAW: LANGUAGE, LOGIC, AND PRACTICAL RATIONALITY
CONVENOR: BOJAN SPAIĆ
Scope: The special workshop gathers scholars from the University of Belgrade, University of Genova, University of Lisbon, and the University of Surrey, engaged in the upcoming Horizon project entitled ALF: Advancing cooperation on the foundations of law.

Description: Philosophy of law is dependent on discussions, elaborations, and philosophical positions in other branches of philosophy. And while the inspiration for philosophical work in law can come and does come from discussions about many topics of philosophical interests, some of them have traditionally been linked to law more often than others. This has been the case with language, logic, and practical rationality. Special Workshop will gather contributions discussing and critically assessing the idea that language, logic, and practical rationality have a fundamental role in philosophical accounts of law, legal education, and legal practice. Contributions will aim at answering some of the following questions:
1. What philosophical topics are foundational to law?
2. In which way might some topics be considered foundational and others not?
3. In which ways are language/logic/practical rationality foundational to law?
4. What current language/logic/practical rationality issues are essential from the standpoint of philosophy of law?
5. Should language/logic and practical rationality be central in legal education?
6. What are the best ways of teaching language/logic/practical rationality to law students?
7. Does research into foundations of law have practical consequences for lawyers?
